The 2024 Grammy Awards saw Killer Mike win in two of the three categories he was up for. The Atlantan won three of the four categories at The Academy Awards that are just for rap music. He won Best Rap Album for his most recent album, Michael, and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his song Scientists & Engineers, which features Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane. For the title of Best Rap Album, 21 Savage, Metro Boomin, artists like Drake, Nas, and Travis Scott were up against it.

Along with his earlier wins, Killer Mike beat artists like Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, Coi Leray, Lil Uzi Vert, Baby Keem, Black Thought, and Kendrick Lamar. Lil Durk and J. Cole’s hit song All My Life got the award for Best Melodic Rap Performance, the only category where Killer Mike wasn’t nominated.

Who Is Killer Mike?

Michael Santiago Render is an American rapper, actor, and activist who was born on April 20, 1975. He goes by the stage name Killer Mike. Mike first appeared on Outkast’s 2000 album Stankonia. He then joined the group on their Grammy-winning song The Whole World from their 2001 greatest hits album Big Boi and Dre Present… Outkast. Since then, he’s put out five full-length albums as a solo singer under his own name.

In December of 2008, Mike obtained a recording contract with T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records, which is also situated in Atlanta. He put out R.A.P. Music in 2012, which was created by the American rapper and producer El-P. Killer Mike and El-P then formed the duo “Run the Jewels” in 2013. They were signed to Fool’s Gold Records and put out their first album, which was just their name, in June 2010.

As a social and political activist, Mike is also well-known for his work on topics like police brutality, social injustice, and institutional racism. Besides writing songs about racism and police brutality, he has also given many lectures at colleges and universities, written social justice articles for prestigious magazines like Billboard, and been in interviews talking about police misconduct and race relations. He was a vocal and obvious supporter of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.

After Sanders dropped out of the race, he refused to back Hillary Clinton, and he will do the same for Sanders’ 2020 campaign. Mike has made appearances in several films, including Baby Driver, Idlewild, and Atlanta.

Netflix started showing Killer Mike’s documentary series Trigger Warning in January 2019. In it, he talks about problems in the U.S. that affect black people. Mike and his wife, Shana, got married in 2006 and they are proud parents of four children.
