Dave Chappelle is an American comedian and actor who was born on August 24, 1973, in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. He is best known for co-creating, writing, and starring in the breakthrough television sketch comedy program Chappelle’s Show (2003–2006).

As a child, Chappelle lived in two different places: Silver Spring, Maryland, where his mom worked as a professor at several different schools, and Yellow Springs, Ohio, where his dad was an adjunct professor at Antioch University.

At 14 years old, he initiated his stand-up comedy career in the Washington area. In 1991, after graduating from the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, he relocated to New York City in order to pursue comedy on a full-time basis. Before Chappelle reached 20 years old, he had already established himself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry by performing on television and playing a significant supporting role in Mel Brooks’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993).

Dave Chappelle’s Younger Years

On the 24th of August, 1973 David Chappelle was born in Washington, District of Columbia. He spent his childhood in the capital as well as in the nearby town of Silver Springs, Maryland. Chappelle’s mother, Yvonne, worked as a professor at Howard University and then at the University of Maryland, in addition to acting as a Unitarian minister. A performance by Chappelle was given at the Montreal Comedy Festival, which took place just before the end of his first year in New York.
