Who Is Ayo Edebiri?

Actor Ayo Edebiri gained recognition for her portrayal of sous chef Sydney Adamu in the FX series The Bear. Her exceptional performance in this character earned her prestigious accolades, including a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy award in 2024.

As a stand-up comedian and a writer for a number of television productions, including the series Dickinson on Apple TV+ and the animated comedy Big Mouth on Netflix, Edebiri had a successful career prior to landing this critically acclaimed part. In the latter, Ayo Edebiri took on the role of Missy, which was her first significant acting chance. The Dorchester district of Boston is where Ayo Edebiri spent her childhood. She was born on October 3, 1995, in Boston. Her father is originally from Nigeria, while her mother is from Barbados. Both of her parents are immigrants to the United States of America. Ayo, who was raised as an only child, was profoundly impacted by religious beliefs throughout his childhood. In June of 2023, she revealed that the Bible was a significant factor in igniting her passion for storytelling.

Ayo Edebiri and her family were regular attendees of a Pentecostal church. She started writing stories in her diary on a regular basis, and by the time she was about eight or nine years old, she had already written a fantasy novel about a young girl who was an orphan.

Her father introduced her to Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), both of which starred Clint Eastwood. It was around this time that she acquired a penchant for visual storytelling. When it came to her future, however, she stated that she did not consider acting to be a viable option for a job because she desired to have genuine work that would allow her to earn money.

Despite this, she was able to satisfy her artistic impulses by participating in improv performances during her middle school and high school years. Edebiri attended schools that were mostly white. The Boston Latin School, which was founded in 1635 and is currently the oldest public school in the United States, was Edebiri’s high school of choice. She went to New York University after receiving encouragement from her parents to pursue a career in education and eventually become a teacher.

Following a period of two years, Ayo Edebiri started to reevaluate her future plans. Because of the encouragement of her friend Rachel Sennott, she decided to transfer her degree to dramatic writing and started performing stand-up comedy. Edebiri was resolute in her purpose to pursue a career in comedy by the time she received her diploma from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 2017.

  • Early Comedy and TV Writing

Ayo Edebiri continued to perform stand-up routines in New York City after she successfully completed her degree. Around the course of a single day, she would sometimes play many times at open mic nights and other venues located all around Manhattan and Brooklyn. In an interview with Forbes in 2019, Edebiri stated that she had given herself two years until the expiration of her undergraduate teaching degree in order to attempt to build a name for herself in the comedy industry. If she failed to do so, she would then go back to school to get her master’s degree.

In the same year that she had a set featured on Comedy Central’s Up Next series, she decided to give herself a little challenge, which turned out to be okay on the whole.

A Trajectory of Ayo Edebiri’s Professional Career

  • Television

Together with her friend and fellow comedienne Rachel Sennott, Edebiri co-wrote and co-starred in the web series Ayo and Rachel Are Single, which is a scripted digital comedy that began running on the network in May of 2020. The only seasons of The Rundown with Robin Thede and Sunnyside on NBC were both written by her during her time as a television writer. During the sixth season of Big Mouth, Edebiri became a member of the writing staff associated with the show.

Ayo Edebiri was chosen to assume the role of Missy when Jenny Slate decided to step down from her job as the voice of the character. This decision was made in order to allow a black actress to portray the role. The conclusion of the fourth season of the show marked the beginning of her portrayal of the character through voice acting. It was in the second season of Dickinson when Edebiri appeared as both a writer and an actress on Apple TV+.

Her projects include voicing the lead part in the animated series We Lost Our Human, which is also produced by Netflix, as well as co-producing and writing with Netflix for the animated series Mulligan. The planned film version of the young adult novel Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between written by Jennifer E. Smith also features her in a supporting part. On the comedic series The Bear that airs on FX and Hulu, Edebiri is a main cast member!

Known for his performance in the 2023 film Dad & Step-Dad, Colin Burgess is a writer and actor now working in the entertainment industry. Between the years 1968 and 1972, the Australian rock musician was a member of “The Masters Apprentices” and played drums for the band. He was the first drummer for the hard rock band AC/DC, and he served in that capacity from November 1973 to February 1974.
