Mandisa Dead?
Singer Mandisa Lynn Hundley was born and raised in the Sacramento, California area, where she often sang at church. Following her ninth-place result on “American Idol” in 2006, she rose to prominence. Ryan Seacrest remarked to the singer as she departed, stating that she had a wonderful spirit on the program. With that behind her, Mandisa released her first album, True Beauty, in 2007. It was nominated for best pop and contemporary gospel album that year.
With her fifth studio album, Overcomer, she took home the trophy for best contemporary Christian music album in 2014. With the release of her biography Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy in 2022, Mandisa candidly discussed her battles with depression, weight issues, the coronavirus epidemic, and her faith. A profound melancholy left the late singer feeling so hopeless that she considered suicide, and she was honest about her struggle with this darkness.
Sadly, the Grammy-winning vocalist, who debuted on “American Idol” in 2013, passed away on Thursday at the age of 47. The representative informed the media that the singer’s body was discovered in her Nashville, Tennessee, home. According to the spokesman, the death reason of Mandisa is still unknown. Her representative asked the public to pray for her family and close-knit network of friends during this extremely difficult time.
The Early Phase of Mandisa
Even before her untimely death on April 18 at the age of 47, Grammy-winning American Idol alum Mandisa had a roller coaster of a life. Mandisa, who was born in Citrus Heights, California, to John Hundley and Ruby Berryman on October 2, 1976, surged to prominence among viewers and reached the top nine of Idol alongside Katharine McPhee, Kelly Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett, Elliott Yamin, and eventual champion Taylor Hicks. After honing her vocal skills at Sacramento’s American River College and singing in church, she continued her education at Nashville’s Fisk University.
Following her graduation from college, she worked as a backup vocalist for Shania Twain and Trisha Yearwood. According to Baptist Press, Mandisa worked for Lifeway from 2000 to 2003 as a telephone customer service representative. Following that, she placed ninth on American Idol’s 2005 fifth season.
Later in her career, she began participating in Living Proof Live events after forging a partnership with the Lifeway women’s ministry team, where she helped lead worship and perform.
After her appearance on the show, the soulful vocalist published her first album, titled “True Beauty,” in 2007. On the Top Christian Albums Charts, the album debuted at number one, making her the first new female artist to achieve this feat in the 27-year history of the statistic.
Mandisa Overcomer
Mandisa went on to create six studio albums, four of which were nominated for Grammys.

Her inspiration for Overcomer came from her best friend and backing singer Lakisha Mitchell’s fight against breast cancer. Later on in 2014, just after Mandisa was awarded the Grammy, Mitchell passed away.
In 2018, Breonus Mitchell, the husband of Lakisha Mitchell and the senior pastor of Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Hermitage, Tennessee, entered into a new marriage. After her friend Lakisha passed away from breast cancer in 2014—following the album’s success—Mandisa fell into a severe and protracted despair, which she eventually recovered from.
Mandisa Confronted Depression
The fight against breast cancer that her closest friend and backing vocalist Kisha Mitchell had served as an inspiration for Overcomer. Mitchell passed away later in 2014, after Mandisa’s Grammy victory.
That Kisha’s death rocked Mandisa to her core was something she shared with the media in 2017. She announced that she fell into profound despair and resorted to her previous habits, which involved food. She went into a cocoon after regaining all 120 pounds plus 75 more after a prior weight loss.
At that moment, Mandisa persuaded herself, that she was just fighting humiliation, thus there was no need to leave the house. With that in mind, she stayed inside the house mostly. She proceeded downstairs, sat in the recliner, and watched television continuously whenever she stood up. The sole occasion she ventured outside was when she chose to order McDonald’s after becoming sick of pizza delivery.
Suicide was a real possibility for her during that time since she felt so down and out. For some reason, she convinced herself that she was a believing Christian who would spend her last days in paradise with Jesus. During that difficult time, Mandisa began to hear the idea that, since she was in excruciating pain, she could be in heaven with Jesus that moment if she committed suicide.
A rare foray out of the house occurred in 2016 when Mandisa went to see the film War Room, which featured her song Press On. Exiting the theatre, she discovered that a group of her pals had orchestrated a generous intervention on her behalf. There were a lot of sticky notes all over her car as she got out of the theatre. Many of the notes expressed their love, longing, and desire for her return.
Once Mandisa’s friends pushed her to seek counseling, she was able to begin coping with her loss. She likely wouldn’t be alive after enduring such a horrific ordeal if that hadn’t occurred. As she detailed the event in her memoir, the gloom began to lift at that moment. She insisted she caught a glimpse of a flicker and that light was starting to peek through. Throughout the book, Mandisa extols the virtues of her personal relationships. Along her life’s journey, she had formed friendships with people who were quite different from herself, she wrote. People God sent to help her through her trials were often unexpected, but she also had the opportunity to offer support to them.
A Comeback
The treatment helped Mandisa deal with her suppressed emotions, which she had previously stated in 2017 was more beneficial to her health than stuffing her face with Krispy Kremes. Then there was the matter of Mandisa gradually making an effort to fit herself better physically. The challenging aspect of managing her connection with food was something she found intriguing about her food addiction.
Released in 2017, Out of the Dark was Mandisa’s return to music and an outlet for her pain. She expressed her wish that the album would provide hope to those who are struggling. She also hoped that her narrative would resonate with others who are stuck and that she could be a ray of light for them.
Through the course of time, she arrived at a point of introspection. She shared her personal experience with depression, stating that when a person is going through a difficult time, they frequently believe that they are the only ones through it. On the other hand, they are most certainly not the only people going through something similar.
MANDISA DEAD
An NBC News statement from her representative states that Mandisa’s body was discovered at her Nashville home on April 19th. Additional specifics, including the cause of death, are unknown at this time, according to the spokesman.
Nonetheless, they humbly request that the general public offer prayers for her loved ones as they navigate this extraordinarily challenging period. Over the course of her passing, tributes were being brought in for the former American Idol contestant.
Some of them were; Ben Mandrell, the CEO of Lifeway, expressed his deep sorrow upon learning about the death of their friend and former colleague. He mentioned that the Lifeway team is devastated by the loss and fondly remembers the happiness and compassion she brought to the workplace on a daily basis. He expressed that their sincere prayers are directed towards her family.
On Friday, the Christian radio network K-Love honored the artist on social media, acknowledging that Mandisa faced challenges and was courageous enough to openly discuss them, thereby encouraging others to discuss their own difficulties.
Late American Idol candidate Mandisa will be remembered in a special tribute episode airing during the show’s fifth season. The show will pay tribute to the 2005 Idol contestant on Monday, April 29th’s ABC programming. The show released a statement stating that Mandisa was a beloved legend on American Idol and throughout the music business. Further, she had achieved platinum status as an artist and had garnered multiple Grammys for her compositions. The entire cast and crew of the show are really saddened by her death and want her family to know how sorry they are. Last week, Ryan Seacrest took a few moments out of his show to unveil a tribute to Mandisa that will air next week.
